This one-minute ad for Spotify focuses on the immersive power of music through a fun-loving diva alien named Rory.

After all, what better way to celebrate the year of 202X than another catastrophic event? Enter: alien invasion. While his military coworkers are engaging in world domination in the background, Rory is distracted by his discovery of human music. The camera continuously tracks Rory in the center as if he’s the star of a music video. In the end, the Spotify logo is revealed in his sunglasses; the lens through which he views the world.

Process

In the early stages of character design we discussed taking inspiration from underwater creatures and insects. Ultimately, we decided Rory needed a more humanoid, rounded shape design for audiences to better empathize and connect to.


We decided to stick with the classic UFO design as later versions of the storyboard required it to be a clear, distinctive shape in the background.



For our storyboard we researched various music videos and considered how Rory’s personality and alien nature might lead to goofy interactions with human objects.



The final color palette we chose was “Bubble Gum Space Pop” because it had colors we felt were strongly associated with the galaxy and bubblegum pop.



For complex scenes we used a combination of Cinema 4D and our own poses as reference.
